    TRANSIT (Petzold, Germany, 2019, 6)

    I just never accepted the conceit, in part because it works against materiality and raises too many questions in the vein of “why is THIS detail updated but THAT one not?” Or to be pithier, “why can’t they get a plane?” or “so the Germans are Nazis or the EU?” Petzold is a superb director of mood and actors and is probably incapable of making an outright-bad film, and if I bought the premise, like I did the cosmetic surgery in PHOENIX, I’d probably love this one too. The disembodied third-person-friend narration is a genius move ... or would be because it tends to set the film as a past-tense memoir (another reason the present tense decor and the North African refugees are actively distracting).
