  • The Man of the Sea, 1920 - ★★★★½

    L’HOMME DU LARGE (Marcel L’Herbier, France, 1920, 9) R

When I saw this movie for the first time more than a decade ago, I said “greatest title cards ever.” I had never seen anything like them — multi-styled, colored expressionistically, weird framing, sometimes interacting with the imagery. The impressionistic but unsubtle use of color also created the very story in some respects. But by now, as a much more experienced viewer of silent films, while I’ve still never seen such a nonstop barrage of inventiveness in these matters, the uniqueness is no longer there. Which makes the film’s one flaw — the logic of the ending — stand out more than it did. Still great and not to be missed though, as I adore this kind of 19th century morality tale (adapted from a Balzac short story) of an indulgent father, a wastrel son and a loyal daughter that still manages not to be just a “Prodigal Son” rerun. Also hit me more this time that the father — a peasant seaman who wants a son to succeed him — is in many ways as bad as his son, albeit not exactly in the same way but every bit as self-indulgent and indifferent to the women in the family. Or as Harry Chapin put it, “my boy was just like me, yeah.”

Skip Rotten Tomatoes, they’re biased SJWs too afraid to criticize things like the Ghost Busters reboot. Avoid giving them ad revenue by using the minimalist alternative, Cinesift, for a quick aggregate:
