SHADOW (Zhang Yimou, China, 2019) 9

Now *here* is a Chinese visual-stunt movie I can get behind. The stunt here is that, apart from flesh and blood, there is basically no color in SHADOW, everything in a black-and-white grayscale, with an occasional very-muted natural green, and some earthtones late in the film in a certain character’s costume and some dramatically important bamboo. I kept veering back-and-forth on whether what we see is an in-camera or an on-set trick, eventually deciding on “both.” The easy-to-control palace settings and clothes are much blacker-and-whiter while nature’s rock formations and forests are a muddy gray. It definitely does not look like any movie I’ve ever seen. Indeed, SHADOW inverts the whole career of master director Zhang Yimou, who came to worldwide fame with such overripe and highly symbolic Technicolor melodramas as JU DOU and RAISE THE RED LANTERN, a look that seemed to reach parodic scales in CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER. Here, Zhang makes a film as florid, in a way, as any. But one thing from which he’s never wavered is his narrative acumen and flair for melodrama (the contrast with Bi is simply crushing). Narratively, Zhang goes back to the martial-arts and Shakespearean palace-intrigue mix he developed in HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, with more than a few nods to Kurosawa’s KAGEMUSHA in the basic “warlord’s double” premise. There’s less wires and splashy colors, but flashy and splashy rain aplenty and much more wtf-ery in such gadgets as knife-umbrellas (?), metal oyster shelters (?), and legend-era scuba tanks (really ...) But by the end, it’s just intimate daggers and then four people in a room. The last shot is perfection. In a more cynical film culture it would be a perfect sequel teaser. Here, it’s thematic underscoring, who knows everything and how publicly. Speaking of cynical film cultures, SHADOW is a completely accessible action film that I saw ... at a Landmark art house. SMDH.

  • ‘Shadow’ Review

    BY:

Shadow, the new action epic from Chinese director Zhang Yimou, is a bit slow to get rolling and likely inscrutable, politically, to the average American. Yet what it lacks in immediate gratification it makes up for in visual spectacle: from the set design to the action choreography to the costuming, Shadow is sumptuous and sensuous throughout.

Skip Rotten Tomatoes, they’re biased SJWs too afraid to criticize things like the Ghost Busters reboot. Avoid giving them ad revenue by using the minimalist alternative, Cinesift, for a quick aggregate:
