  • Eric Blair on Alisa Rosenbaum
(”Lord of the Dance” is briefly mentioned in this.)
What would one George Orwell have had to say about Ayn Rand and “Atlas Shrugged”? Often one hears the question, of a film, “Is it any good?” This is the wrong question. The question should be: Is it interesting? A movie that has something to latch onto — one that’s not desperately dull, like “Just Go With It” or “Little Fockers” — automatically gets points from me. This is why I gave Michael Flatley’s unintentionally hilarious “Lord of the Dance” two stars instead of zero — it held my interest. It made me laugh. In a way it was an utter failure, but in a way it was a masterpiece of bad taste. I feel the same way about “Xanadu” — the movie is bad, yes, but it’s bad in utterly fascinating ways. You want to talk about it afterwards. You need to talk about it! I come out of a movie like “Just Go With It” darkly frustrated. Whatever is there to say about this non-effort? It’s genuinely a lot of hard work to find any words at all. Orwell, below, could as easily have been writing about movie reviewers. Says the man born Eric Blair: The prolonged, indiscriminate reviewing of books is a quite exceptionally thankless, irritating and exhausting job. It not only involves praising trash–though it does involve that, as I will show in a moment–but constantly INVENTING reactions towards books about which one has no spontaneous feelings whatever. The reviewer, jaded though he may be, is professionally interested in books, and out of the thousands that appear annually, there are probably fifty or a hundred that he would enjoy writing about. If he is a top-notcher in his profession he may get hold of ten or twenty of them: more probably he gets hold of two or three. The rest of his work, however conscientious he may be in praising or damning, is in essence humbug. He is pouring his immortal spirit down the drain, half a pint at a time. So for those wondering why I somewhat enjoyed the movie of Alisa Rosenbaum/Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged,” which is pretty far from being a classic of cinema: It isn’t humbug. It contains ideas. It gives me something to write about.]]>

Skip Rotten Tomatoes, they’re biased SJWs too afraid to criticize things like the Ghost Busters reboot. Avoid giving them ad revenue by using the minimalist alternative, Cinesift, for a quick aggregate:
