LIGHTS OF OLD BROADWAY (Monta Bell, USA, 1925, 7)

Wish this film had done more with aristocrat twin (Marion Davies plays twins adopted at birth, one by 1940s NY Dutch gentry, the other by a lumpenprole Irish family) and there’s never a scene where the two learn they’re biological twins. But what dominates LIGHTS OF OLD BROADWAY — an uptown-downtown romance between working-class Marion and the son of the same upper class family at a time of class strife — is charming and entertaining, further proof that Davies might be the greatest comedienne of the silent era and the first screwball heroine. It’s not all Marion either, as her crusty old-school father has a lot of scenery-chewing fun, especially with the Irish confetti, and there’s some witty appearances by a young future president and a famous inventor. The use of color is smart too — after an early stage number, it’s reserved for a moment that’s both as exciting and as transformational for the characters onscreen as it is for us. It’s telling that ... to speak vaguely ... that for a movie that’s explicitly about class conflict and ressentiment, social snobbery, and intermarriage, how LIGHTS manages to get the families together at the end. It’d cause Marx and Engels to scream.

Skip Rotten Tomatoes, they’re biased SJWs too afraid to criticize things like the Ghost Busters reboot. Avoid giving them ad revenue by using the minimalist alternative, Cinesift, for a quick aggregate:
