INFINITE FOOTBALL (Corneliu Porumboiu, Romania, 2018, 9) R

A natural follow-up to THE TREASURE, both films being desert-dry comic studies of lovable eccentrics with crackpot plans and a wtf? last shot. But there’s (even) more depth here, as Porumboiu both (1) shows how these plans are expressions of Laurentiu’s quest for meaning in life (ugh; but there’s no better way to put it), a desire to make life make sense, and (2) allows un”script”ed reality to spill into the frame in the father’s portrait, the old woman in the office, the soccer coach. This very short film (70 minutes) ends with the camera in a very slow walk as Laurentiu engages in high Greek exegesis of Plato and the New Testament in voice over that ... is totally contrary to what he had hoped to achieve with soccer (think about the use of “force” throughout the film). In its gentle, low-key way, FOOTBALL is a criticism of rationalism as, ultimately, anti-art, -life that avoids the easy slippage into adolescent nihilism.

Want even more consensus?

Skip Rotten Tomatoes, they’re biased SJWs too afraid to criticize things like the Ghost Busters reboot. Avoid giving them ad revenue by using the minimalist alternative, Cinesift, for a quick aggregate:
